How to “deceive” the brain, and get “eternal happiness”?

In early December, the annual meeting of the Society of Neurobiology took place. A group of scientists demonstrated a technology capable of creating “eternal happiness” with the help of a brain implant. Small electrodes are invisibly located in different parts of the brain, and constantly read its activity. The data is converted into a personal algorithm called a “mood map”, which can judge the general mood of a person based only on brain waves.

When the beginning of the depression period is noticed, the system sends an electrical signal to the center of the mood of the brain. And until the condition improves, she will continue to send impulses.

The algorithm is absolutely independent. All signals, settings are hidden under the lid. The system does not require medical guidance, and the patient does not know anything about the signal, just feels a general relief of sadness.

Scientists funded by DARPA believe that these futuristic implants can help veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, or people with deep depression that can not be cured by drugs.

This system is primarily designed to support psychiatric patients, but the potential impact can be far beyond its limits.

Of course, brain surgery is too expensive and unprofitable. Especially for ordinary people, when it comes to getting “eternal happiness”. Nevertheless, it is very likely that the system will eventually be non-invasive, and then it will be possible to influence the activity of the brain without surgical intervention.

But what will happen then? Can you trust someone to control their feelings? And who dares to get “eternal happiness” by artificial means?

Many scientists are interested in this problem. According to one of the largest studies of genetic research, the cause of happiness or discontent of a person with his life lies, in the genome as well. More than 190 scientists from 17 countries analyzed 300,000 genomic data. As a result, sets of genetic variations have been found that are responsible for a sense of satisfaction. Also, those kits that are associated with depression are also found. It is not yet known whether it is possible to prevent it before the depression manifests itself.
