For the first time, a flight from the USA to Australia was carried out by a Boeing Dreamliner 787-9 passenger jet fueled with mustard and kerosene. More precisely, the mixture consisted mainly of aviation kerosene, and 10% was mustard oil. The whole flight took fifteen hours. At the same time, the emission of harmful substances was 7% less than usual.
The Quantas liner was fueled with mustard and kerosene and flew from Los Angeles to Melbourne. Biofuel in the aircraft tank was contained in a relatively small percentage. But it still helped to reduce the level of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. In the future, a transition to clean biofuels is planned. But for now even such a result contributes to the struggle for the preservation of the ecology.
It is noteworthy that the use of fuel from mustard will help not only to reduce the release of CO2, but also to improve the yield.
This benefit for agriculture is due to the fact that the demand for growing the necessary culture will encourage farmers to grow it on their fields. For the soil it is very harmful, if only wheat is grown on it every year. And this trend is natural in this area, – the expert in the field of agriculture, Daniel Tan says. If farmers grow mustard seeds to receive oil at least every third year, this will improve the condition of the soil. This product is usually added to canned food and confectionery. Thus, the use of fuel “from mustard” will bring a double benefit. From one hectare of seeds, approximately 2 tons of oil is extracted (this is about 400 liters of biofuel and 1400 liters of renewable oil).
Quantas plans to launch the first commercial flight entirely on biofuel by 2020.
In 2012, the first test flight of Falcon 20 took place, which was filled with 100% fuel from mustard (seeds). This flight on biofuel was recognized as successful and led to new experiments in this field.
