A plane crash of the Bolivian airline LaMia occurred in Colombia, near the town of Rionegro. Air liner followed in Medellin from Santa Cruz de la Sierra. 81 persons were on the board, including nine crew members and seventy-two passengers. There were the players of the Brazilian football team “Chapecoense” among them. According to the authorities, it is likely that some passengers and crew have survived.
Brazilian players were flying to Colombia for participation in the match of the South American Cup. They had to compete with the “Atletico Nacional” football club. The match was scheduled for 1 December.
Federico Gutierrez, Mayor of Medellin, gave a speech on television. He stated that there was a tragedy of huge scale.
The exact cause of the crash is not known yet. According to the official data, the crew handed messages about engine trouble and a low level of fuel. The pilots wanted to make an emergency landing.
A serious investigation will be carried out.
