The Japanese government has expressed indignation over the renaming of some disputed Kuril Islands between the states by the Russian authorities. An official protest was sent to the head of the Russian government.

According to General Secretary of the Cabinet of Ministers of Japan, such actions are unacceptable and contrary to the position of the state.

The question of the division of the Kuril Islands is under discussion among Japan and Russia since the days of World War II. A certain agreement was reached in 1956. The Joint declaration was even signed between the countries. The only disputed territory remains — the southern part of the Kuril Islands.

Renaming a debatable area

February 11, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has signed a decree. According to this law, the five controversial islands will be named after prominent figures of Russian Federation. Japanese officials categorically disagree with this situation and plan to continue the negotiations.
