Another Ukrainian city can get a new name. A draft decision on the renaming of Severodonetsk of the Lugansk region has registered in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The deputies from the Block of Petro Poroshenko submitted it. In their opinion, Severodonetsk must be renamed in Severskodonetsk. The deputies consider that modern name of the city does not comply with Ukrainian spelling. The faction representatives insist that Severodonetsk is a transliteration of the Russian-language word. According to the phonetic and morphological norms of the Ukrainian language, the city must be called Severskodonetsk.

Since 2014 Severodonetsk is considered to be a temporary administrative center of the Lugansk region.

According to deputies, their substantiation of an expediency of renaming the city is enough. There is absolutely no necessity of holding the public discussions on this issue.

Earlier, Dnepropetrovsk and Kirovograd have been renamed in Ukraine. These cities have received new names: Dnieper and Kropivnitskiy accordingly.
