The world’s largest raw opal is exhibited in the South Australian Museum. Its name is “Flame of Australia.” It was discovered 70 years ago. All this time the gemstone was kept in a special safe. Opal weight reaches almost one kilogram (998 grams). Approximate estimated cost is 680 000 dollars.

Director of the South Australian Museum says that this stone is very rare. Its unusual color can only be achieved through the creation of certain climate conditions. Many millions of years ago, Australia’s inland sea evaporated. This fact has caused the appearance of unusual stone.

This amazing discovery has been found by the Australian miner. He was selling opals but decided to leave the stone. And now, decades later, family members, fulfilling the will of their relative, gave the jewel in the museum.
