In the capital of Russia, on Borovitskaya Square, the solemn opening of the monument to Prince Volodymyr the Great took place. The ceremony was attended by top officials of the state. The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinskiy and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin were among them.

During the speech, Putin called Vladimir the Great an outstanding ancestor of the Russian people. He has also added that the Prince of Kiev was the spiritual founder of the Russian state.

Vladimir Putin has emphasized that modern Russians had to follow the precepts of the Kiev prince. It is necessary to withstand all the threats and challenges that arise in the way of the state’s development.

The Patriarch Kirill has consecrated the monument to Volodymyr the Great.

The author of the monument is a famous sculptor Salavat Shcherbakov.
